INTO University of Alabama at Birmingham - SEVIS/SEVP Guidance and Changes

Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) have released long awaited guidance on Conditional Admission and English Proficiency along with guidance as it relates to Pathway/Bridge programs.

University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is currently in process of going through recertification and has been advised by SEVP to follow new guidance immediately.

What does this mean for future UAB students

UAB Direct Entry: No changes

INTO UAB Standard Pathway students:
Effective immediately Pathway students will receive an I-20 following these guidelines.

·         Education Level: Other
·         Major 1:  ESL (Secondary Language Training) – this follows the new guidance for Pathway/Bridge programs
·         Major 2:  Students progression degree
·         I-20 Duration: Length of duration to only include time in pathway or Academic English.  So student in accelerated PW will receive an I-20 for 4 months.
·         Cost that is associated with length of pathway program.  I-20s have to include living costs as a distinct line item in the “Estimated Average Cost of Attendance” section.
·         Remarks section will include the following details: After meeting UAB progression requirements and successful completion of the Pathway Program, student is eligible to matriculate into a UAB degree program in “name of the relevant MAJOR.

Attached is an example of the Standard Pathway I-20.

INTO UAB Accelerated Pathway only students:
Effective immediately Accelerated Pathway students will receive an I-20 following these guidelines.

·         Education Level: Other
·         Major 1:  Students actual progression degree
·         Major 2:  None
·         I-20 Duration: Length of duration to only include time in pathway i.e. 4 months.

Changes amidst an intake is not preferable however this is a directive to all US campuses from SEVP, and the university has made the decision to make the change immediately to comply with these new guidelines and our recertification. Regardless, what is very important  to stress to students, is that the students will receive a new I-20 when they progress into each phase of their academic career but will not need to re-apply for the visa.
