WHAT IS THE EXPRESS ENTRY PROGRAM

The Express Entry Program is a more transparent, efficient, and streamlined program to help professionals migrate to Canada under the economic immigration programs. This specifically aims to grant permanent residence under the following programs.

  1. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
  2. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  3. Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

PROVINCIAL NOMINEE PROGRAM (PNP)

The program is designed to target a skilled workforce; necessary to contribute to the economy of a certain province.

There are more than 80 provincial nominee programs to choose from. Applicants must have the required skills, education, and work experience as required by the PNP of the province to that they are applying.

They must be willing to live in the said province. Once nominated by a province, a nominee applies to IRCC for permanent residence Federal Skilled Traders Class (FSTC).

CANADIAN EXPERIENCE CLASS (CEC)

In 2008, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) launched the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) to offer a directed skilled worker lane to temporary foreign workers and international graduates who want to obtain permanent residence status.

Specifically, the CEC is designed for permanent residence applicants who have relevant Canadian work experience that they obtained through a temporary work permit. The applicant should have worked in Canada for a minimum period of 1 year in the past 3 years to be eligible to apply under the CEC.

The CEC has now become one of Canada's largest immigration processes for skilled workers and is also one of the fastest application routes, taking only about three to four months to process.

FEDERAL SKILLED WORKER (FSW)

Since 1967 the Federal Skilled Program has been the primary gateway for immigration to Canada. It is Canada’s flagship immigration program which had enabled tens of thousands of foreigners to become a part of Canada’s skilled workforce. The FSW is the fast-track path toward Canadian immigration under the Express Entry System. Candidates applying under this program are scored and assessed under the Comprehensive Ranking System to determine their eligibility. Many factors including age, education, work experience, adaptability, etc are evaluated for eligibility. To apply under the FSW program, the applicant must meet the minimum requirement.
  • Have one year of continuous work experience in the past 10 years under a National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill.
  • Have at least a secondary education.
  • Have a minimum level of CLB 7 in all four language areas in one of Canada’s two official languages – English or French
There is no upper limit on the number of applicants and is open for application throughout the year.

WHICH PROGRAM SHOULD YOU CHOOSE

  • You can apply under the PNP programs if you want to settle in a certain province, but to apply for a PNP you must meet the requirements of any of the other 3 programs (FSTC, CEC, or FSW)
  • You may want to consider an application under the CEC program if you have a minimum of 1 year of full-time Canadian Work Experience, in the past 3 years.
  • You may choose to apply under the FSTC program if you are skilled in a trade listed in the NOC (National Occupational Classification) and have 2 years of full-time work experience in Canada in the last 5 years. Part-time work adding to a duration of 2 years also qualifies.
  • You may consider the FSW program if none of the above apply to you. Being the main economic immigration program in Canada, most of the applications under the Express Entry program fall under this category.

ELIGIBILITY CHECK

The first step in the application process is to ensure that the applicants' profile meets the required point criteria. To enter the Express Entry pool, you must meet the criteria for the Federal Skilled Worker Class. The maximum score is 100 and the candidate must attain a minimum of 67 to be considered. The factors to affect the scores are:

Age:

Maximum points if you are between 18-35 years.

Work Experience:

More years of work experience means more points.

Skills in English / French:

You must have at least 6 bands in your IELTS equivalent to CLB 7 to be eligible to apply and score the minimum points. Higher scores mean more points.

Highest level of Education:

A higher level of educational qualification means more points.

Offer of a Job:

Adds 10 points to the score.

Adaptability to life in Canada (the government’s opinion of your profile):

Having close family in Canada or a spouse who is migrating with you makes for additional points.

GETTING THE DOCUMENTS READY
After you have assessed your eligibility, it is time to begin accumulating the necessary documentation. Though time-consuming, this is an essential part of the process. The following documents are required:

  • Travel Documents
  • Educational Credential Assessment. Assessment of your credentials from an organization approved by IRCC

After submission, if your profile fits the requirements of one of the programs under the Express Entry Program, the application shall move to the Express Entry pool and will be scored based on the CRS. The Express Entry program evaluates the applicants on a point-based system. The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is used to score the profile of the candidate. The maximum score is 1200 of which 600 are the core set of points and the additional set of points is another 600.

CORE EVALUATION IS BASED ON

  • Skills and Experience
