The Student visa (subclass 500) allows eligible students to study in Australia for up to five years. This visa allows students to live, study, and work in Australia.
The visa allows students to study the following types of courses:
· Higher education
· Vocational and Education Training (VET)
· Pathway courses
· English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)
· Primary and secondary school
· Secondary school exchange programs
· Postgraduate research
As of October 1, 2023, student visa applicants must show that they have at least AUD 24,505 in savings to cover their annual living expenses in Australia.
To apply for an Australian student visa, you can:
1. Create an account with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) called ImmiAccount
2. Complete the application online
3. Submit your application
The application fee for a primary applicant is $630, and there is an additional applicant charge of $470 for an 18-year-old included in the same application.
International students who have attained an eligible qualification from an Australian educational institution can apply for the Post-Study Work Stream visa. This visa must be applied for within six months of completing the course.
December 12, 2023: The Australian Government announces that it will tighten the visa rules and international students will have to strive harder to score higher on English language tests to replace low-skilled workers with high-skilled workers in the future. Also, the prolonged stay will be slashed for staying back after graduation. There is also a proposal to set up a specialist skilled visa with a new processing timeline which will also see a week slashed.
October 4, 2023: Australia announces that international students applying for a student visa will have to show funds worth AUD 24,505 to cater to the living expenses in Australia from October 2023 onwards. Failure to do so can lead to rejection of student visa applications in Australia.
From July 1, 2023, students studying in Australia on a student visa will be able to work for 48 hours a fortnight only. While the students' institutions are not in session, they can work for an unrestricted number of hours. However, those working in aged care since May 9, 2023, are eligible to work for unrestricted hours up till December 31, 2023. Students studying in Australia must ensure that they maintain their attendance, course progress and course enrollment. Employers are restricted from cancelling visas if the extension is requested for those working in the aged care sector or bar students from working 48 hours a fortnight.
