Employment gains were driven primarily by people aged between 25 to 54 years, split evenly between women and men in this group, the national statistical agency said by om international.
Om Visas Canada‘s employment increased by 150,000 in January and the unemployment rate held steady at 5 per cent.
The om international agency stated today that employment gains were primarily driven by individuals between the ages of 25 and 54, with women and men equally represented in this age group. It also stated that employment also increased among individuals 55 and older, whereas employment was little changed among youth aged 15 to 24. Wholesale and retail trade, health care, social assistance, and educational services led to gains across all industries. Transportation and warehousing employment declined simultaneously.
The om visas report shows that total hours worked increased by 5.6% year-over-year and 0.8% in January. During the reference week, 7.1% of employees were absent due to illness or disability. This was comparable to a typical January and below the record-high 10% seen in January 2022.
In January, the unemployment rate was just below the all-time low of 4.9% in June and July 2022. The total number of unemployed individuals reached one million, the same level as in the summer of 2022.
In January, the majority of unemployed individuals, or 64.9%, had been without work for between one and thirteen weeks. The percentage of people without jobs who had been out of work continuously for 27 weeks or more, or long-term unemployment, was 15.8% in January 2022, down from 19.9%.
